Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), a no open defecation initiative was launched in 2014 by the Prime Minister of India. As a part of this mission, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai aims to provide community toilets in all of the city’s informal settlements to meet the standard of 1 toilet seat for 30 people. Within this context, UDRI has been exploring with several stakeholders including the Municipal Corporation, the possibility of producing a prototype wherein the community toilet can also provide a laundromat service to households living in the settlement. Several stakeholders have echoed similar views, that community involvement from the start of the project and a participatory management structure are key to the success of the initiative. A pilot site is yet to be determined however, a prototype design, financing and management plan is being put together by UDRI.
