The UDRI, in April 2000, initiated the formation of a Society for 20th Century Architecture. The objective of the Society is to list and document 20th Century Architecture and new towns, as well as promote the conservation of these buildings which will include lobbying with State Governments where heritage legislation is in place. The objectives include the setting up of an archive, creating awareness through lectures, seminars, exhibitions, publications and lobbying with State Governments for the protection of 20th century buildings. The Society was formally launched in Feb 2001 and initiated identifying a preliminary list of 20th century heritage buildings in Mumbai. These were documented with relevant information and a monograph produced of 4 significant examples built in the 1950s.
