PERFORMANCE OF HERITAGE MONUMENTS IN EARTHQUAKES: CASE OF INDIAN SUB CONTINENT

Event Date: 6th February 2013
Speaker: Alpa Sheth
Venue: Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai

Sandhya Savant was a Conservation Architect and alum of Sir JJ College of Architecture, who made a tremendous contribution in the realm of conservation practice in the city of Mumbai before passing away suddenly in 2006. Since then, supported by her family, UDRI conducts an annual memorial lecture to deliberate on urban issues.

This lecture discussed the three earthquakes of Sikkim (2011), Kashmir (2005) and Bhuj (2001) in order to recommend a policy approach identifying the key issues to be addressed to make such communities less vulnerable in disasters and make a compelling case for building resilient infrastructure on part of the state and capacity building of the local community for disaster mitigation.
