The Urban Design Research Institute was established in 1984, as a public charitable trust, by Charles Correa, Nani Palkhivala, M.A. Wadud Khan, Bilkees Latif, Keshub Mahindra, Ratan Tata and Nana Chudasama to enrich the understanding of the urban environment and work towards its improvement.

 

UDRI is a Registered Charitable Trust and donations to it get tax exemption under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

UDRI is also registered under Section 6 (1) (a) under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 1976, (Registration No. 083781053 Nature: Educational).

We are one of the 30 institutes (additional) that have been made part of the Expert Heritage Bodies group. As per the notification, this is done to “expedite the framing of heritage bye-laws of Centrally protected Monuments and protected areas that have been under the consideration of the Government”.

Section 20E (l) of the AMASR Act: Heritage bye-laws. — The competent authority, in consultation with Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage, being a trust registered under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882 (2 of 1882), or such other expert heritage bodies as may be notified by the Central Government, shall prepare heritage bye-laws in respect of each protected monument and protected area.
